Book Description:
RUN TOWARD WHAT SCARES YOU…

After losing everything in a fire, Leo and his mom move into an unfinished development far off in the middle of Braxton Woods. As summer vacation begins, Leo and his new friends set out to explore the land behind their homes. They are alarmed to find sinkholes, horrific creatures, electrical disturbances, and even a buried carnival from long ago. Despite their growing fears, they are drawn toward solving the extraordinary mystery. Little do they know they are about to unearth a sinister force and discover a dark, forgotten secret from the town’s past. Ultimately, they must overcome the willies, heebie-jeebies, creeps, shakes, and shivers as they chose danger over a far greater threat—a dull summer.

GUEST POST

BECOMING A WRITER

First things, first. I did not start out as a writer. Even though I’ve been writing on and off all my life, the path to get here was anything but direct. I grew up in Queens, New York, on a steady diet of art, toys, comics, movies, and books. As a child, I was always kicking around idea for stories, comics, or short films. Many minor creations along the way happened. It was fun to explore them and see where they led.

Everything creative blurred together back then, but art stood out as my primary focus for many, many years. During high school, I took the subway to school each day to study illustration at Manhattan's High School of Art and Design. After graduation in 1988, I furthered my art studies at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, where I graduated in 1992 with a BA in illustration.

After college, I moved back to Queens and lived the life of a graphic designer, screen printer, illustrator, and web designer. I worked on countless licensed product t-shirts during the six years I worked at the Queens-based apparel company, Changes. From there, I surfed the dot.com wave at a pioneering social networking website, TheGlobe.com, until the bubble burst and the company closed in 2001. By then, my first son was born, and I combined freelance graphic design and being a stay-at-home dad. Soon after my wife started freelancing from home too, as an educational writer, and we decided to leave the big city for a slower life upstate, in Albany, New York.

While in Albany, I began helping my wife with some of her freelance writing projects, then eventually started taking on some assignments of my own in the middle grade nonfiction market. Throughout that time, I never lost my love of art and photography. After my second son was born, I spent several years as a member and volunteer for a local gallery in Albany called the Upstate Artists Guild. There I started many valuable friendships that continue to this day. If you've ever had artists as friends, you know how encouraging they can be to people pursuing a dream. So that's when I began pursuing my age-old desire to scratch a fiction-writing itch that had been with me on and off since childhood.

As a dad of two boys and a writer for the middle grade children's market, I began to get nostalgic for my youth and started rediscovering role-playing games that I could share with my kids. This furthered my desires to create and write, and I started a gaming/pop culture blog called Wizards Never Wear Armor. All along, I kept plugging away at fiction manuscripts. I’m grateful that those efforts are finally paying off.
