The Beltane Escape
(The Two Realms Trilogy, #1)
Author:  Ariella Moon
Publication date: February 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Book Description:
Lady Fenella, ever surrounded by guards, knows only responsibility and duty. She believes Merlin and the Lady of the Lake are myths, Gran’s warnings about Fairy are superstition, and Fairy was invented to make children behave.

But then Gran brands her, Lord Argonshire kidnaps her, and the Lady of the Lake makes her a pawn. The Highland heiress must betray her newly betrothed and fend for herself when she dives into a wormhole to save her cousin. She lands in a part of Fairy even fairies avoid, and joins forces with Talfryn, a half-Viking/half-Fairy.

Fenella must use her wits to find her cousin, free the Lady of the Lake, and reach the wormhole in Glastonbury by Beltane. Nine days to unshackle herself from a sorceress, prevent a war between rival clans, and decide in which realm—and with which lad—she truly belongs. Oh, and The Most Powerful Wizard stands in her way.

Excerpt

Fenella threw out her hands, but the sides of the burrow were too slick for her to gain purchase. Pitched downward, headfirst, she opened her mouth to scream, but no sound came forth. A howling wind propelled her. Her skirt fluttered and snapped like a ship’s sail as she plummeted faster. She squeezed her eyes shut and mumbled a prayer.

Something gentle and wonderful caressed Fenella’s bare hands. She raised her chin, and fairy dust landed on her forehead like goodnight kisses. Time shifted, slowing magically. The burrow yawned into a gently swooping curve, and she drifted downward.

Her shoulder glanced against something padded, knocking the magic dust from her skin. Time shifted again, and she fell faster than afore. A scream escaped her throat and rippled behind her like a Beltane ribbon. She smacked into the burrow’s side with a teeth-rattling bounce that flipped her onto her back.

Specks, some as large as poppy seeds, pelted her face. Pixie dust? She clamped her mouth shut and squeezed her eyes closed. The specks clung to her damp skin. Immediately, she began to itch.

She slid faster and faster, feet first now, carried along by lilting laughter that grew louder as she descended. She threw out her hands again, searching for something to slow her fall. The laughter stopped. Then the burrow heaved, disgorging her. She landed with a hard plop on something spongy.

“Double pox!”

“My blushers! Ye have ruined my blushers!” someone wailed.

Fenella swallowed hard. The room spun around her in a brown swirl. She dug her fingers into the broken mushrooms to anchor herself. A frowning bearded face swam afore her.

“I’ll have to grow a whole new batch of blushers, no thanks to ye, missy. What do ye have to say for yerself?”

Fenella turned away from the raspy prattle and vomited.

“Ooh!” said the mushroom grower.

Fenella wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. The world stopped spinning. She brushed the itchy specks from her face and realized she had fallen into a sizeable cave.

“Rough tumble down the wormhole?”

She turned towards the gruff voice, took one look at the speaker, and shrank back. “Dinna take another step, goblin.”

About the Author
Ariella Moon draws upon her experiences as a shaman to create magical Young Adult fiction. Her Two Realms Trilogy is a medieval fantasy adventure series with romantic elements. The Teen Wytche Saga is a series of sweet contemporary paranormal romances.

Ariella spent her childhood searching for a magical wardrobe that would transport her to Narnia. Extreme math anxiety and taller students who mistook her for a leaning post, marred her youth. Despite these horrors, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Davis. Ariella lives a nearly normal life doting on her extraordinary daughter, two shamelessly spoiled dogs, and an enormous dragon.

  1. Question to the author: What was the hardest part of writing this book?

    1. Hi Mai. What a great question! The hardest part of writing The Beltane Escape was changing course when Edward demanded I change my portrayal of him. As a result, I am STILL revising the next two books in the trilogy! But I am glad I did, even though it threw my editor quite a bit. Edward has replaced Aidan from Spell Struck as my favorite book boyfriend!
