Excerpt from Break My Bones

I’ve been granting wishes for years. Most were groovy. Some were total downers. Some never should’ve been granted. That choice—whether they should be granted or not—wasn’t mine to make. My boss was the granter. I was the guide. We didn’t give out things/items/possessions to fulfill wishes. We gave life-changing journeys and, more often than not, people needed help on journeys. So I did my job and helped, when possible, and life kept moving on down the road.
Today this little bird arrived with a message from Kaf, my boss, and told me that a new wish would be coming soon. It shared with me the who, what, why, when, and where.
“I don’t want this wish,” I told the carrier pigeon. “Share the love with someone else.”
I had five years left to my indenture with Kaf; I’d agreed to fifty. My only requirement being that I stayed eighteen the entire time—didn’t want to be all but dead at the end of my commitment.
Forty-five years of standing by and watching as people of all genders, ages, and sometimes questionable mental states got their hearts’ desires. Some, like those that wished for a dying loved one to suddenly recover from fatal illnesses, were fulfilling for me.
Others I despised but didn’t have the option to refuse. For example, the man who, upon getting released from jail for drunk driving, went directly to the bar to celebrate and drove home, killing a single mom on her way to pick up her six-year-old son. In that accident, he suffered injuries so massive the doctors were sure he’d die. If it was up to me, he would have. But his wife said she couldn’t live without him and made a wish that came from her very soul that he live. I had to make sure he did. Where’s the justice?
The pigeon flew away before I could attach a response to its scrawny little leg. What did it care that I didn’t want to do this anymore? Instead I closed my eyes and transported myself to Kaf’s mountaintop. Which was all for show. There’s nothing magical about that mountain. I followed the narrow, winding path through his creepy cave with its luminescent stalagmites and stalactites and stood before the tremendously buff Japanese brother perched on a throne of smoke.
The throne was a nice effect. Hadn’t seen that before.
“Did I do something wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing I am aware of,” came the reply in a smooth baritone.
“Then why are you torturing me?”
For the blink of an eye, his lips turned in delight.
“You are being a little dramatic, are you not?” Kaf enjoyed my suffering. That was clear from the gleam of his emerald green eyes and dismissive flick of his feathered quill. Again, all for show because who used a quill anymore? When he saw I hadn’t left, he let out a bored sigh. “This is just another wish, Desiree. Your job, like always, is to guide it.”
He didn’t understand, it wasn’t just another wish. These wishes affected me—and the others in Kaf’s harem of granters—as much as the wisher. I thought the last big one, Mandy’s wish, had been tough on me. But hers only made me remember my regrets. Crissy’s would push me right up to, and possibly over, the edge of all that I had done wrong the year I ran away.
Unlike Crissy, I’d known what I wanted to do with my future. I saw myself fighting for those that needed help, women and minorities in particular. The first real time I was presented with such a test however, I failed and someone close to me died.

About the Author
Shawn McGuire is the author of young adult, coming-of-age novels that blend contemporary settings with a touch of fantasy and magic. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that’s episode IV) as a kid: she couldn’t wait for the next one so wrote her own episodes. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to write is as strong now as it was then. She grew up in the beautiful Mississippi River town of Winona, Minnesota, the small town that inspired the setting for Sticks and Stones and the upcoming Break My Bones. After graduating college she moved to the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin (Go Pack Go!) where she lived for many years. She and her family now call Colorado home and when not writing or reading, Shawn enjoys cooking and baking, crafts, interior decorating, and spending time hiking and camping in the spectacular Rocky Mountains.
