What choices would you make if you knew you might die soon?

From the multi award-winning, best-selling author of four books, including Here, Home, Hope, a gripping and heart wrenching novel about a young mother who has it all. The only problem is she may be dying.

In her previous works including All the Difference, Rouda's characters "sparkle with humor and heart," and the stories are "told with honest insight and humor" (Booklist). "Inspirational and engaging" (ForeWord), these are the novels you'll turn to for strong female characters and an "engaging read" (Kirkus).

In the Mirror is the story of Jennifer Benson, a woman who seems to have it all. Diagnosed with cancer, she enters an experimental treatment facility to tackle her disease the same way she tackled her life - head on. But while she's busy fighting for a cure, running her business, planning a party, staying connected with her kids, and trying to keep her sanity, she ignores her own intuition and warnings from others and reignites an old relationship best left behind.

If you knew you might die, what choices would you make? How would it affect your marriage? How would you live each day? And how would you say no to the one who got away?

Author Interview

1. Tell us a bit about your writing background. How did you get started writing for teens?

I don’t write for teens, I write women’s fiction. But, that said, I seem to include strong teen girl characters whenever possible in my fiction. I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember. I first started writing poetry in sixth grade and have been writing every since. I was an English major in college and after that, began my writing career. I’ve been a newspaper reporter, a magazine writer and editor, a columnist, a copywriter, and on and on. I finally followed my dreams and my first novel was published five years ago.

2. Who/What were your earliest influences?

Like most people, I was influenced by my parents. My dad was a professor and a wrote numerous marketing books. My mom is a creative spirit.

3. Did you face any early challenges to finding success in writing?

Yes. Publishing is a challenge and we all know the stories. For me, my first book’s publishing journey was a breeze. The agent and publisher accepted it the same day. Since then, the path has been much less direct, but every type of publishing scenario is worth knowing about. Whether you are traditionally published, small press published, self-published or choose all of the above – the “hybrid” author – writers today need to define success for themselves.

4. What are your favorite books as a reader today? What qualities in them appeal to you?

I love almost every type of story, except science fiction! I’m not sure why I’ve never been a sci fi fan, but it is what it is. I especially like to read books that have a message or stick with you after you finish the last page. The emotions need to be real, then the connection is made and the story lingers in your mind.

5. What do you do outside your writing life?

I’m a mom of four great kids. I live in laguna Beach, California, so I love to spend time outside. I’m learning to paddle board. I love yoga and gardening, too. I also have three dogs, a great husband, and a fish named Phil. Life is good.

6. What encouragement helped you along the way?

Never give up. And to find the courage inside myself to finally go for my dreams. That was the biggest help. Believing in myself.

7. What advice do you have for beginning writers?

Write. Read. Write some more. Read some more.

8. What's up next for your fans?

I will have two romance novels out this year – a first for me! I’ve never written in the romance genre and I’m excited to hear what my readers think and to hopefully reach new fans!

9. What has been your biggest compliment?

With IN THE MIRROR, my latest release, the story is about a young mother who has it all except she might die soon. The biggest compliment has been the positive reviews of the novel.

10. Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans and readers?

A sincere thank you for helping to make my dreams come true. Truly!
